Shanghai Binfencheng Landscape Design
Project scale: 304,910 square meters
Design company: Nikken Sekkei Co., Ltd.
Completion time: 2017
Above one of Shanghai’s busiest subway stations is an urban Green Valley complex. As the most brilliant highlight of the project, the designer incorporated a trail-like landscape design park into the architectural space. And through the URBAN FARM concept that integrates the natural environment and human space, this 20,000-square-meter green valley complex “weaves” its pace into the daily lives of citizens by creating a smart roof form. The roof is decomposed into individuals with different scales but interlocking at different heights, and a witty outdoor platform and slopes that are richly varied and closely connected on a three-dimensional level are created, and are connected to the ground below the roof. The function of the building and the human activities it contains echo each other.
This is a canyon-shaped architectural topology, with a building area of 300,000 square meters. A wide greenway (landscape green belt) is designed in the center of the project site. It is located directly above a core subway station in Shanghai, and it wraps the interchange station of Line 7 and Line 12-Longhua Road Station, attracting all the people who visit this subway station every day and the citizens living around the project
A huge green space is designed in the site. Among these greens, the designer took the “Door Window” of Shanghai’s traditional buildings as inspiration, and set up a large number of outward-oriented small activity platforms at different building heights; , Office entrances, retail shops and public transportation venues are closely woven into a lively and interesting three-dimensional space, condensed into a large-scale urban public space with plenty of natural light and green elements.
The project makes full use of environmental technology and arranges all commercial circulation in a semi-indoor and semi-outdoor gray space without air conditioning. Through this move, the air-conditioning energy consumption of 112,000 GJ per year under normal circumstances will be reduced to zero in this project. Moreover, the design without air-conditioning effectively reduces the annual carbon dioxide emissions of this project by about 72,200 tons, which is equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide that a 26.2 hectares of forest can absorb in a year
The architectural space form adjusts the thermal performance of the environment itself to resist the urban heat island effect, which not only awakens the city, but also brings vitality to the social environment. Such a refreshing and invigorating environment, together with large-scale green landscapes and buildings, make Urban Farm the most eye-catching star in the core area of Shanghai.
